And in this case, two pictures show just what power crews in Maine are coping with today as they try to restore power to more than a 130,000 customers without power in the Pine Tree State.

First, there are the thousands of people who like their counterparts to the south are delaing with the aftereffects of last night’s stunning wind. Central Maine Power crews snapped a couple of photos on Brighton Ave., in Portland.

Guest post: R.D. Sahl does a little snow watching

Posted by Ted McEnroe December 20, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Editor’s Note: NECN’s R.D. Sahl is often in the mix as an anchor for storm coverage. He’s a little under the weather instead of out in it, but still took a little time to share some thoughts from home, and a couple of memories. Love the socks story. We need to make him tell the whole thing.

Sunday morning. Watching the snow fly. Itching to be outside. Eager to be back at work after recuperating from some surgery.

There’s a brilliant scarlet cardinal at the bird feeder on the back porch. Caught a couple of nice close ups before it flew off.

The dogs had a ball in the snow this morning. Casey, the six month old pup, tearing through the powder having what my wife and I call a “nutty.” Dear old Callie, her coat powdered with white, sniffing the air.

It brings back memories of snowstorms past:

The clink of tire chains on snow packed roads.

Cross country skiing out the back door when my Dad was stationed in Norway.

The D.C. snowstorm when my car was towed on Massachusetts Avenue. It took two days to find it. A hundred bucks to get it back. And the battery was dead.

The Blizzard of ‘78. I gave the late Connecticut Governor Ella Grasso a pair of dry socks. She returned them laundered and neatly wrapped with a nice note several days later.

The snow and ice in northwestern Connecticut when Lin and I were married 35 years ago this month.

Snow can be a bother, to be sure, but on balance the good memories outweigh the bad.

Maybe, if I promise to take it very slowly, I can convince my wife to let me take a short walk in the woods this afternoon.

Severe Thunderstorms Diminishing Overnight

Posted by Tim Kelley July 27, 2009 at 1:52 pm

cam12
A Beautiful sunset at Ossipee Lake New Hampshire, from the CanoeKing.com cam. This beauty belies the severe weather in other areas, as slow moving thunderstorms hit hard in many New England Towns today, Monday July 27, 2009.
Damage from flooding, wind, hail, and lightning are being reported from Connecticut to Maine (see below).
This pattern is with us all week, as we are finally on the warm to hot side of a Bermuda High. With a boundary to colder air just to our west, New England is in a, battle zone thunderstorm, set up that repeats each day into Friday. The heaviest weather is likely Thursday and Friday, more flooding would make this the Wettest July in Centuries here in the Northeast. Rainfall Records from 1938 are being challenged.. and no one wants a repeat of what happened later that summer.
The Good News.. Saturday we may get slightly less humid for the Pan Mass Challenge this weekend.
Here are some of the latest damage reports from today.

Severe Thunderstorms Pounding New England

Posted by Tim Kelley July 16, 2009 at 12:49 pm

HAIL TO 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER…THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH…TORNADOS… AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN VERMONT, WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND CONNECTICUT.

As of 10 PM tonight, July 16, 2009 we are finally seeing the last of this severe outbreak. Storms are still pounding Southern Connectticut. The long tracked storm from Washington Vermont to Sandwich New Hampshire had been warned on for possible tornado from 7:15 PM to 9:15 PM. So far no reports of any tornado. How many tornados have we had in New England this year? it’s been while, but I think the count is at about 6. A roof was blown of a barn when that storm crossed Williamstown Vermont. In northwestern Connecticut Radar Estimates that we had more than 4″ of rain. Flooding has been reported. See all the damage reports below.
Saturday Morning this same area may have just as much rain again.

You can follow severe weather using the radar to the right. Red and Orange are the hardest hitting storms. Storm motion is to the east/southeast 25-30 mph.

See Latest Warning’s for Massachusetts and Connecticut here.
See Warnings for Vermont here.
New Hampshire here.

This photo of Mammatus is from Dave Roberts in Sunderland Massachusetts this evening. Mammatus clouds form downstream from Cumulonimbus. This bulbous formation is due cold air sinking, creating a downward forming cloud.

Lewin Xu of Nashua New Hampshire sent this photo from a 2:30 PM today, July 7, 2009. This hail fell from the north side of a storm complex that blasted Hartford County CT, into Worcester and Middlesex Counties in Massachusetts. Radar estimates of 7″ Rainfall centered near Westborough MA, where moderate flooding and road washouts were reported.
Storms have weakened tonight. We are done with the damaging wind and large hail. However downpours and areas of fog will keep us wet into morning. New storms continue to develop to our south and west. With warmer than normal water south of Long Island, the potential exists for a repeat of last Wednesday and Thursday morning. That was when thunderstorms crossed southeastern New England with lightning , wind, hail, and flooding early in the morning. Damage reports from today are listed below. This is the 12th time in 13 days, we have flooding and hail in New England.
