Deep Snow & Sunshine.. Downhill Lowdown

Posted by Tim Kelley Yesterday at 10:16 am

New England has deep snow and plenty of sunshine, for the best skiing this side of Powder. There is hope for a continuation of this great weather into at least part of the weekend. And Maine may miss this the weekend rain altogether. Check this video of Cranmore, provided by Ski New Hampshire. Trails counts are highest, and snow pack deepest of the winter.

Posted by Tim Kelley February 24, 2010 (3 weeks ago) at 12:07 pm

We are in day 2 of, what now looks like, a 6 day storm. Here is video from Wednesday at Attitash New Hampshire, along with snow amounts from part one of this two part storm.

The snow in this image sent to us from Killington Ski Resort in Vermont is the same as the entire mountain ridge from Western Massachusetts up Route 100 to Canada. We have 19″ at Killington and counting.

New Hampshire and Maine are up next. We all get several feet of snow through Sunday February 28, 2010.
See Snocountry.com for latest totals near you.

Snow in The Air

Posted by Tim Kelley February 19, 2010 (3 weeks ago) at 9:54 am

We have classic snow filled wind blowing in from Canada this morning, Friday February 19, 2010. North facing slopes from Bolton Valley to Balsams Wilderness are reporting 3″-8″ Fresh. This video from Mt.Sunapee has some of the totals from our Tuesday Storm.

We also have wind hold issues. Snow showers will continue on north facing slopes this weekend. On the sunny south facing slops from Mt.Snow to Waterville Valley to Sunday River. Either way, the temperatures are coming up and the wind is coming down. We have a little preview of Spring Skiing before the wintry weather (SNOW) returns by Tuesday and lasts into next weekend.

Vancouver 2010- New Englander’s Shine

Posted by Tim Kelley February 18, 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 8:51 pm

The United States leads the world in Medal Count in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. We have to brag about the number of Medal winning Olympians from New England. First to the podium was Hannah Kearny of Norwich Vermont, trains with Waterville Valley BBTS, got to the podium first in the Moguls on Saturday February 13. Also a Waterville Alum, Scotty Lago (Leggo), of Seabrook NH wins Bronze in snowboarding.
Bode Miller of Franconia New Hampshire won a Bronze in the Downhill Monday. He is still up for three more races, Super-G, Slalom, and Super Combined. How many medals will Bode win?

We are already psyched to race Bode when he comes home to Cannon, for the second annual Bodefest April 3, 2010.
Also on Monday February 15th, Seth Wescott came from behind to win Gold in Snowboardcross. Have you ever seen so many wipe outs in Boardercross?

Downhill Lowdown- Nice Start to February Break

Posted by Tim Kelley February 12, 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 8:22 pm

As it snows in Florida today, Friday February 12, 2010, we now have snow on the ground in 49 of 50 states.. Come on Hawaii! Maybe we can forgive Hawaii, 18 foot breakers are rolling into the northwest shores there. Here in New England it seems like everyone else gets the snow, where’s ours? Here is ours, at Jay Peak VT. We maybe having a slow February for natural snow, but the air is cold and snow making teams have been pumping out ton’s of soft snow on many trails throughout our six states. The weather forecast is for some up slope snow near the Canadian Boarder, otherwise sun and clouds with seasonable temps are here for the week, maybe a snowstorm Tuesday. 2010 Winter Olympics Forecast

Posted by Tim Kelley February 12, 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 9:20 am

In my dreams.. I am at Whistler posing in sunshine with Inukshuk – Elevation 7152 feet- Just inland from the Pacific Ocean in British Columbia Canada. This photo is a year ago.

Inuckchuck March 6 09

Today is the opening of 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Alpine Events are on Whistler Mountain, check the great Whistler Cams and Weather here. The freestyle events are at Cypress Mountain, a 2010 foot summit closer to the city.
The weather has been less than ideal lately. Many of the training events have been delayed, and may not be able to be completed. I am not sure weather Alpine Events scheduled for Saturday will be postponed or not.
A series of Pacific Storms are having significant impact on the region through the next 5 days.
Rain and fog at lower elevations, and Snow and fog, and wind at higher elevations will frustrate Olympic organizers and athletes into next week. Here is the current Weather and Vancouver Forecast from the Canada Weatheroffice: Temperatures are in degrees Celsius, zero degrees is freezing, negative temperatures are preferable.

Downhill Lowdown- Olympic Training at Cannon

Posted by Tim Kelley February 5, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Greg Keeler shares video and stills of an olympian training at Cannon Mountain NH.
Cannon has an Olympic skier training with a private coach right now to get ready for the Olympics.
Her name Yina Moe-Lange. She’s a Washington State resident, but a citizen of Denmark and is on the Danish Alpine Ski team. She also may be the second youngest Olympic skier at 16.

She came here though a connection at Franconia Ski Club, of which Bode Miller belonged, and because Cannon has world class training terrain and great conditions right now.
