Comcast and NECN return to YMCA Camp Otter, in Salem, NH!

Posted by Matt Noyes August 31, 2009 at 3:33 pm

It certainly doesn’t seem like an entire summer has passed since about 80 Comcast employees, including members of our own NECN family, converged on the YMCA’s Camp Otter in Salem, NH, to clean-up and repair damage done by the Great Ice Storm of 2008. At the time, we knew it would only be a couple of months before young campers were using the campgrounds for making fun memories to last a lifetime, but it was truly a thrill to return to Camp Otter last week – this time with campers present – to see the smiles painted on the faces of each and every camper. The reception was beyond warm – we were treated like royalty! The kids designed a banner welcoming both NECN and Comcast back to Camp Otter, and we each took video – me with my handheld, high-definition camera to share on the web and in my weather segment on NECN, and Comcast with their professional TV camera to put the kids “On-Demand” with Comcast! That wasn’t all – Comcast presented a check for over $3,000 to Camp Otter to ensure success and lifelong memory-making continues in this little slice of Southern New Hampshire paradise. Below, enjoy the segment that appeared live on NECN’s Good Morning Live in my weather segment on Monday, August 31 at 6:41 and 7:41 AM. Can’t get enough Otter? Storm Recap With a Look Ahead to the 1st Week of September

Posted by Joe Joyce August 30, 2009 at 7:38 am

The rains and winds of yesterday are long gone, but what a little storm that turned into! I know to most of you the storm did not seem like much. But there was explosive thunderstorm growth off the mid-Atlantic coast yesterday afternoon as the Danny became an extratropical low and merged with a energized upper level disturbance pushing off the coast to form a powerful “hybrid storm”. Luckily most of the winds from the storm remained elevated and up in the sky. But late afternoon, as the circulation made landfall just west of Martha’s Vineyard, the winds began to increase and there were reports of Tropical Storm Wind gusts occuring which caused scattered damage along with the 3-5″ of flooding rains in Southeast Massachusetts. Sunday will provide improved warmer weather thanks to a change in wind direction. Looking ahead, a stellar week of weather for the start of September! Full Details inside Read more

Updated: Hybrid storm Danny churns across New England, leaving rain & some wind damage

Posted by Matt Noyes August 29, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Tropical Storm Danny became a hybrid storm and moved across Cape Cod.

Tropical Storm Danny became a hybrid storm and moved across Cape Cod.

Our team watched with intrigue as Tropical Storm Danny was completely absorbed by a storm developing off the coast of North Carolina early Saturday morning, verifying the forecast for a hybrid storm to explode over the Gulf Stream and churn northward. That spun heavy tropical rain into the region from south to north, resulting in localized flooding, and by the time the rain ends, we expect to find some amounts of half a foot!

Danny to team with multiple disturbances, becoming “hybrid” storm for Saturday

Posted by Matt Noyes August 28, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Tropical Storm Danny still looks rather unimpressive on satellite imagery as of Friday afternoon. The storm circulation is well-defined, but consists mostly of bubbling, fair weather cumulus clouds, rather than the towering thunderstorms usually seen with a tropical storm. This certainly means a weaker storm in the short-term, and greatly diminishes the risk of hurricane winds that exceed 74 mph on Saturday, but yesterday’s forecast for damaging wind along the coast with a storm track crossing Cape Cod remains intact…

All eyes are on Tropical Storm Danny, which will likely morph into an extratropical “hybrid” storm over the course of its evolution, bringing New England a little bit of everything – rain, wind and waves. Matt will be posting a full written discussion soon, but in the meantime, check out the video below for details on the entire forecast.
