Is First Storm 2010 A Blizzard?

Posted by Tim Kelley December 31, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Our Friday looks fairly quiet with mostly light snow (some rain at he shore). The snow picks up Friday Night, especially in Maine. The the storm way out at sea begins to intensify and back to the northwest, and eventually southwest. Some of the computer models deepen this storm to 962 millibars, that is stronger than Hurricane Bob in Rhode Island August 19, 1991 (Bob was 964 millibars). Though this extreme is not likely, it is within the realm of possibility..

Blizzard conditions are likely in Maine by Saturday afternoon. As for the rest of New England, we may see near blizzard conditions at the coast in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The worst of this storm looks to be Saturday and Saturday Night. Here is the latest forecast for the track of this long duration storm. We are still forecasting a ‘Blizzard Loop’ as discussed in the Monday Post.

First Night, Winter Classic & a major Weekend Storm

Posted by Danielle Niles December 31, 2009 at 2:29 pm

winter_classicWell we had quite the snow burst this morning and early afternoon across southern and central New England as a fast moving but potent disturbance swept through. Though accumulations were relatively light, the intensity was enough to cause a host of problems on area roads, especially in CT where I-95 had to be shut down for a time. Don’t worry though – any lingering snow showers will taper off quickly later this afternoon leading to a mild and dry evening. So if your plans take you into any first night celebrations, your journey will be problem free – just watch for a few slushy and icy spots on the side streets. Temperatures will drop into the 20s to around 30 by midnight with fairly light wind. But our respite won’t last long… Read more

Frigid Tuesday to Warming With Snow/Rain

Posted by Tim Kelley December 28, 2009 at 8:56 pm

The remnant of the heaviest snowstorm in Oklahoma City Record Keeping spun across New England today. We had Rain at the Coast, and Fat Flakes inland, and now a snowstorm for Maine. Parts of interior Maine will wake to 5″+ snowfall. This upper low on the Maine Coast is now pulling a new arctic cold front out of Ontario.
Behind the front is a trajectory of air from Hudson Bay directly into New England, this produces some of the coldest readings we see in New England. Saving us from record cold this time is the fact that Canada has been warming for the last two weeks, so as Arctic Air goes, this shot is relatively mild. By next week we have Canada filling with new cold as the Cross Polar flow has reversed, and now the air is coming from Russia to our side of the world. After a frigid Tuesday we have quiet Wednesday. The a storm with winter storm warnings in Texas tonight, will get to the east coast Thursday and Friday.

SFX_TIM_EAST_MOVIE

Potential exists for a prolonged snow/rain event for New England. The early call would be a possible low pressure looping somewhere near our shore Thursday into early next week.

Record December Snowfall Across The Nation

Posted by Joe Joyce December 27, 2009 at 1:09 pm

877 new snowfall records were set or tied in the USA in the last week.
And that’s not all, for the week ending Dec 13th, there were 815 new snowfall records set. December 2009 is shaping up to be quite the snowmaker. Many of the records have been beat significantly, and there were a number of all time records broken as well. Signs are pointing to a stormy and cold start to January 2010 too!

Here’s a map showing continental USA records:

Looking into the Crystal Ball as 2010 Approaches

Posted by Joe Joyce December 27, 2009 at 9:58 am

untitled

After two Blizzards in a Week from the Mid-Atlantic to the Northern Plains, 2/3rds of the nation experienced a White Christmas. Ho Ho Ho! The pattern of extremes is showing no signs of letting go of it’s grip on the nation. More cold and snow is likely in the coming two weeks as pressures will be rising in the North Atlantic, creating blocking and a wavy pattern to the jetstream which is good for storm development followed by cold blasts of air. Look inside for a full weather discussion if you dare! Read more
