Wednesday Evening March 3, 2010 Update..
Another bust.. Here is new thinking. The big deal is Coastal Flooding at High Tide around 2 AM. We may have similar flooding to what happened Midday Monday. The snow bands are there, but so far are falling apart as fast as they form. Reports from Cape Cod are 1″-2″, we may see enough for plowing by AM.

Day #7 Stormy New England

Posted by Tim Kelley March 1, 2010 (2 weeks ago) at 8:42 pm

Simply amazing that we have a third storm merging with the upper low stalled over the northeast for 7 days now. The storm that tracked south of New Orleans Friday Feb 26, 2010, across southern FL Saturday, merged with our old Super Storm south of Nova Scotia today, Monday March 1, 2010. The resultant wind from the North ramped up to 50+ in gusts creating waves of 10′-20′ funneling to Massachusetts Bay. The combination of a weeks worth of onshore wind, Full Cold Moon High Tide, and wind from the right direction, brought the roughest seas to shores south of Boston since the April 2007 super storm. Here is the weather map for today. Some photos from the shore are posted below.

There is another storm with 3″ of snow in Dallam texas today. That low will bring another round of Gale Force wind to New England Wednesday. But the heavy precip should stay offshore. Believe it or not, Vermont may get the most in the next few days, from a storm passing way off to the south. Go Figure. About as logical as rain in Maine, and Snow on Cape Cod, that we saw today (another warm from the north due to block).

One Storm at a Time

Posted by Tim Kelley February 22, 2010 (3 weeks ago) at 7:26 pm

An upper low is heading in and cutting off over New England for the rest of February 2010. A series of surface low pressure systems will circulate into this upper low through Friday, then the upper low will spin out over us Saturday and Sunday. Joe, Matt, and Danielle have discussed this in great detail already. So I will try and get the rain and snow forecasts using this graphic. For tonight, Monday February 22, we will estimate how much snow and rain will fall with the first storm Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Tuesday rain and snow are really from two low pressure centers, a 1008 millibars primary low into Ontario stalls, and secondary off New Jersey will deepen to 1004 mb. and dissipate as the center moves into Connecticut Wednesday. We all know this scenario favors rain over snow, especially with no cold out in front.

Snow in The Air

Posted by Tim Kelley February 19, 2010 (3 weeks ago) at 9:54 am

We have classic snow filled wind blowing in from Canada this morning, Friday February 19, 2010. North facing slopes from Bolton Valley to Balsams Wilderness are reporting 3″-8″ Fresh. This video from Mt.Sunapee has some of the totals from our Tuesday Storm.

We also have wind hold issues. Snow showers will continue on north facing slopes this weekend. On the sunny south facing slops from Mt.Snow to Waterville Valley to Sunday River. Either way, the temperatures are coming up and the wind is coming down. We have a little preview of Spring Skiing before the wintry weather (SNOW) returns by Tuesday and lasts into next weekend.

Snowfall 2″ Per Hour Today- February 16, 2010

Posted by Tim Kelley February 16, 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 7:16 pm

Check this note from Ben in Eliot Maine:
We had no snow in Eliot, Me at 3:30 PM. It started between then and 4:30. Started sticking to the roads at 4:30-5… I went upstairs to take a nap… came down at 7:30 and we had 12 inches, Measured, on a picnic table ot in the yard. This snow fell straight down and fast. I left to plow and it snowed another 3 inches by 10 PM. we have a total of 15-16 inches here at the farm… I measured 20 different spots… no drifting. This was crazy!!! So, you can say ELIOT had the most!!! Thanks Matt and Tim, we always rely on your forcasts over the rest…. this one you were dead on saying it would be localized. —Ben G.
back to previous post..
Banding snow moved into New England early today. By 7 PM we have many reports of 5″+ of wet snow, with reports of more than 2″ per hour in the heavier bands. Near the shore we had wet snow pasting to every surface with reports of tree branches breaking. This slushy snow will refreeze as wind increases and temperatures fall overnight. Fluffy snow inland will start blowing around. here are latest amounts. Snow will continue heavy at times through the overnight, gradually ending west to east.

Snow to fall for all of New England on Tuesday – Ski Country to benefit, as well!

Posted by Matt Noyes February 15, 2010 (4 weeks ago) at 1:09 pm

Visible Satellite Imagery shows an energetic disturbance moving east across the Ohio ValleyA well-defined swirl evident on radar and satellite imagery today represents the next energetic disturbance that will affect New England weather. A piece of this system delivered snow to Kansas over the weekend, causing three separate pileups involving 90 cars in total! Of course, we expect New England drivers to handle the snow better, but some spots may see a foot of the white stuff on Tuesday. The first question that comes to many minds very well may be, “Is this one for real?”…

back to regular post..
When and How Much?
This is THE QUESTION we get asked most often. We love to know how much snow will fall at my house, when does the snow start? When will the snow end?
The general answer is Wednesday 7 AM to Thursday at 2 AM. You can push this time back a bit toward Cape Cod, and forward a bit in Connecticut. How much? Generally 10″ or so, a bit more south of Route 90, a bit less to north. For our region north of a line from Rutland Vermont to Augusta Maine, this storm is a miss.

The Pacific Storms slamming California and much of the west are finally diminishing by this weekend. But not before both blizzard and tornado conditions coexist in CA and AZ. See Damage reports for CA here, and AZ here. Go to snocountry.com to see snowfall amounts in southwest.
And guess where this picture is from?
