Stormy Sunrise Thurs Dec 3, 2009

Posted by Tim Kelley December 2, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Late sleepers may miss the tropical downpours early Thursday December 3, 2009. But no matter when you get up, the wind will grab your attention, and possibly your hat too. Wind gusting past 50 mph, first from the south or southeast, then from the southwest and west, is causing widespread tree damage with scattered power outages.

Northern New England, hit hardest during last Saturday, will not be quite as windy as coastal areas. Notice the white arrows with the circular center, this is the low pressure center, forecast to be about 988 millibars over VT/NH during the morning. Near the center, we have lighter wind, almost like an eye. Wind will shift from south to west as the center passes from southwest to northeast during the day, sunny breaks are expected by afternoon. This storm had snow in Dallas Texas, tornados in Florida and 5″+ Rainfall in Tallahassee, and will bring record warmth to New England. Read on for records to beat and to see the multiple advisories in effect here.

March Noreaster

March Noreaster

As discussed earlier, we are in a bit of a prize fight with mother nature. We should be proud we have lasted this long! But alas…it appears winter has been saving the best for last, and is ready to deliver the knockout punch in this 15 round fight called “winter”. The good news is now that it is March…meteorological winter is behind us…(Dec,Jan,Feb- the three coldest & snowiest months of the year). So welcome to meteorological Spring! Now how about that Nor’easter! Read more

Winter Storm Update- 2/22/09

Posted by Joe Joyce February 22, 2009 at 1:15 pm

ww92 After a cold start, warmer air off the water has been advecting into New England with a SE wind. Temperatures have climed into the 30’s & 40’s ahead of the storm. This has allowed the precipitation to start as a rainy mix. This rainfall will help to cool the atmosphere back into the 30’s and even below freezing…as the tempreatures should strt to fall back towards their dewpoint. As the storm approaches Cape Cod by sunset, the precipitation will become heavier as the storm starts to deepen. SE winds will start to shift to the NE inland which will help to reinforce the cold and allow rain to start to change over to snow in Central & Southern New England. The coast will remain rainy past 7 PM, before a quick change over to snow as the storm pulls away later tonight. This will keep accumulations down.
The clashing of a Cool N wind along with the warmer SE wind will allow a coastal front to develop, allowing or enhanced lift and the potential for heavier bands of snow to form on the colder side of the front, with considerably less snow at the coast. Read more

2 Eyes on 2 Storms

Posted by Joe Joyce February 16, 2009 at 7:32 pm

che2_halloween_eyeballs_thumbWe continue to monitor a midweek disturbance which is currently affecting California’s weather with gusty winds, locally heavy rain and mountain snow. Energy digging down for the polar jetsream will dig down and help to direct this moisture towards the Northeast ,once over the Rocky Mountains. The expected arrival time of this precipitation is shortly around sunset Wednesday. Temperatures will be just cold enough to support snow at the start before warming SE winds will allow the snow rain line to push north of the Pike later Wednesday Evening. Read more

Brief Warm-up Before Another Snow!

Posted by Joe Joyce February 1, 2009 at 8:12 am

USA! USA!

USA! USA!

The Sunday is getting off to a cloudy start. This is the leading edge of warmer air that is trying to push into New England. The lighter warmer air is forced upward as it overrides the cold heavy air at the ground…this forms clouds…even a few snow showers through the north this morning. These clouds will continue to trek eastward with increasing afternoon sunshine. The Sun along with a warming SW wind will allow our temperatures to moderate above freezing to slightly above normal levels…as the mercury will climb to close to 40 degrees south. A colder cloudy day in Maine likely with highs remaining in the 20’s. We will hold onto the “milder” air through Monday. Clouds will be on the increase ahead of next storm which has been a challenge to forecast to say the least! Though uncertainty still remains, models are starting to agree that there will be a plowable snowfall on Tuesday…the question is how much?! Read more

Weekend Answers and Questions

Posted by Joe Joyce January 31, 2009 at 8:46 am

Powder in the Glades

Powder in the Glades

Somethings in life are certain, while others are not. These are a few of the things I know for sure this weekend. It will be colder, brisk Saturday with highs in the 20’s. NW winds will sometimes gust to 30 mph making temperatures feel like they are in the Teens and single digits. This will likely be the best all around ski weekend we have seen yet this winter…with Powder skiing to be found off the beaten path. 100% open terrain. Vermont has seen several new inches the past couple days to add to the bases which are averaging about 3-6 feet. There will be some wind chills today…But Sunday will feature the arrival of warmer air! Read more

35 Below Zero to 57 Above Zero in a Single Day

Posted by Tim Kelley January 29, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Yesterday morning the low temperature was 35 below zero at Masardis Maine, the high temperature in Falmouth Massachusetts reached 57 degrees above. A nice gradient of 92 degrees from coldest to warmest in New England. The thermal gradient is fuel for storms that are a result of balancing out temperature in inequalities. We got the slop storm. Not our worst, but it is much worse to our south. In Kentucky, 1000’s remain without electricity.
Today in New England, a look at the blue sky and the lazy anemometer (Mount Washington was down to west wind 14 mph at 4 PM), it’s as if nothing happened. The day turned out beautiful beyond the call of the forecast! The calm after the storm. But under foot, we are iced over.. at least in my neighborhood.
