DownHill Lowdown March 3, 2010- Sugarbush Powder
Posted by Tim Kelley March 4, 2010 (2 weeks ago) at 6:39 pm
Mountain Wrecking Crew Productions scored first tracks on Castlerock at Sugarbush Vermont Saturday February 27, 2010. Bob and Nancy Hennessey report nothing but powder after SuperStorm 2010. How did they get first tracks of Weds-Fri Snow? We had wind hold Thursday and Friday.. leaving knee to waist deep pockets of snow. This weekend we get sunshine along with the deepest base depths of the winter.

Surprise Snow in Vermont Jan 27, 2010
Posted by Tim Kelley January 27, 2010 at 11:52 am
We endured 2″ of Rain and Melting Monday, now winter is back. Snow guns have been turned on, groomers are tilling the snow to a granular surface, and it’s snowing! Mount Mansfield has been snowing since Tuesday afternoon. A foot of new snow at Stowe (Jay & Bolton too) goes above and beyond the forecast of any man or machine.

Powder Alert at Stowe, Weds Jan 27 photo.
For complete snow condition update, see snocountry.com.
We have up slope snow and squalls in the forecast through Thursday Night, then the wind and chill Friday. The weekend looks cold and dry.. not too windy.
Not Extreme Cold Here- Some Ice Still Not Safe
Posted by Tim Kelley January 12, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Though winter started fast with record snow in October, The cold and snow disappeared all together, with record warmth, in November. Our December was up and down temperature wise. So far, January has been close to normal weatherwise. Here at NECN we (especially Matt) have been straight out with weather and our new graphics system. So we have not been out to play to much until this past weekend. It was easy to leave the house after only a few minutes of watching the Patriots Game. So some of us finally got to play some pond hockey over the weekend.

We found this little pond in Hingham MA with safe ice, and many happy skaters. The ice surface quality was marginal at best, but at least it was thick enough.
But not all the ice is safe. Over the weekend we had a tragic snow machine accident in Southern Vermont.

An Interview with Four Olympians at the 28th Annual Boston Globe Ski & Snowboard Expo, 2009
Posted by Matt Noyes November 20, 2009 at 6:01 pm
I headed to the Boston Globe Ski and Snowboard Expo with the intention of stopping in briefly at the Vermont skiing media reception, representing my station, NECN. As a skier, you can imagine this meteorologist’s excitement when I got the opportunity to meet and interview FOUR Olympians – Ross Powers (2002 Olympic gold medalist in the half-pipe and two time Olympian), Donna Weinbrecht (Olympic gold medalist in the mogul skiing event in 1992), Fuzz Feddersen (Olympic aerial skier extraordinaire who now showcases that talent as The Flying Ace All-Stars aerobatics extravaganza), and the one and only Ski Hall of Famer Tommy Moe (a double Olympic medal winner, downhill gold and Super G silver at Lillehammer, Norway, 1994)! What an amazing experience to meet these four friendly, warm, down-to-earth yet out-of-this-world talented athletes – I had to share it with you! You can meet them this weekend at the Expo – find out more Expo details by clicking here. The still images in the video are from Norwegian channel NRK.
I also took some time to catch up with representatives from a few of our New England ski resorts – including a stop at the Vermont Ski media reception. Here’s what the folks I spoke with wanted to be sure to share with you, their beloved skiers and my beloved viewers!

New England Hurricane History- Ophelia 2005
Posted by Tim Kelley August 20, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Great post by Matt below. This situation reminds me a bit of Ophelia in September 2005. While we all stared at Ophelia meandering around the Carolina’s, a band of tropical downpours set up with flooding rain for New England. Bill is a huge scary storm, but we are more likely to have evacuations in Vermont due to flooding, than near our coastline. Outside of 10′-20′ Ground Swells, Bill (like Ophelia) may be a non-story for New England. The National Hurricane Center Bill Forecast is below along with the Track of Ophelia.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Expired- July 31, 2009
Posted by Tim Kelley July 31, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Nancy Hennessey sent us this photo from the road to Vermont today. The damaging thunderstorms have ended for tonight. Tropical downpours will be gone by sunrise. We have many reports of flooding and wind damage from our final storm of record wet July 2009. The Storm Prediction center in Norman, Oklahoma had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of western Connecticut until 9 PM this evening. They were right, 100s of trees are reported down again today. Click HERE to see flood warnings that are currently in effect, and read on for more details regarding damge reports…
