Powerful Storm Into Canada- Now Colder Quiet
Posted by Tim Kelley March 11, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Most of New England had rain and mild air today, Wednesday March 11, 2009. But in northern Maine we had 1″-2″ of snow. This image form the MaineWind.com cam showed the fat flakes at Mars Hill Maine at lunch time. There is a new cam feature at the Mars Hill wind wind farm, check it out.

The track of the storm from the plains into Canada is one that brings warmer air to New England. On the back side of that storm, the roads in North Dakota have reopened after a 2 day Blizzard. Record cold is reported in a half dozen states from California to Montana. One of the colder spots was Stanley Idaho, where the -22° tied the record set in 1977. In Billings Montana, -10° is the coldest this late in the season since -11° on March 24, 1965.
Here on the warm side of the storm in Burlington Vermont we reached 52°, the highest so far in 2009. Now we get colder wind. Thankfully we are experiencing a slow controlled melt down of snow and ice, and no flooding has been reported. Temperatures will be below freezing in the mountains for the next few days. After that we will have daytime highs in the 30s and 40s, with nighttime lows below freezing. It looks like a nice weekend for skiing, and also the snow machine and ice fishing season will continue in many spots. And if you are looking for golf- Connecticut to Cape Cod has bare ground with a few courses open.
AAAAAAhhh! We’re Melting!

Bye Bye Snowpack!
Yes…melting with be the theme of the weekend. Those of you with a few inches of snow on the ground will see the snow disappear just like the wicked witch of the winter! Saturday will be absolutely gorgeous. Make sure to get outside and enjoy! A week front rolls through this morning providing a wind shift to the west. Skies will be filled with sunshine all day. After a mild start, Temperatures will climb into the 40’s and 50’s…even eclipse 60 degrees in a few locations away from the coast. With the heating of the day, winds will turn onshore for an afternoon seabreeze. In summer, a seabreeze is welcome relief…but in March, with water temperatures in the upper 30’s….a seabreeze can be a bit of a spring party pooper, adding a significant chill to those who live along the coast. Clouds will be on the increase this afternoon ahead of our next disturbance which will be rolling in tonight. Read more
Warmest of 2009, But not as warm as 1981.
Posted by Tim Kelley February 11, 2009 at 8:55 pm
We hit 61 on the NECN Thermometer today. Boston Logan Airport reached 58°, missing the Record of 62 set in 1981. Most of the records for February 11 are from 1981. The exception is Bridgeport Connecticut, where 59° today broke the record of 55° from 1960. This is the first time this year I was able to get my workout in on a big patch of grass, out from under 41 days of snow cover- while comfortable in shorts.

Though it is fun to have a lawn back, I can even see green grass buds sprouting form the frozen ground, I will miss having snow on the ground. We have had at least 2″ snow cover since January 1st. This is about as long as I can remember having snowpack near the ocean in southeastern Massachusetts. When will it snow again?
