From Severe Storm Center, a rather rare meso discussion on heavy snow in Maine.

MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY SNOW WILL PERSIST THIS EVENING THROUGH THE
OVERNIGHT WITHIN A QUASI-STATIONARY NW TO SE-ORIENTED BAND. SNOWFALL
RATES WITHIN THE BAND SHOULD REACH 1 IN/HR AT TIMES.

RECENT RADAR IMAGERY HAS DEPICTED SNOW IN AN INCREASINGLY
BANDED/CONTRACTED STRUCTURE FROM COASTAL WASHINGTON COUNTY NWWD INTO
NRN PISCATAQUIS COUNTY. MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW HAD LIKELY COMMENCED
WITHIN THIS BAND /REF KMLT 2309Z METAR ON FAR WRN EDGE OF BAND/.
AFTERNOON MODEL FORECASTS ARE CONSISTENT THAT THE VIGOROUS SHORT
WAVE TROUGH OVER WRN NEW ENGLAND WILL ONLY SLOWLY SHIFT
EWD…RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL 900-700 MB FRONTOGENETICAL FORCING
REMAINING NEARLY STATIONARY THROUGH EARLY WED. THIS WILL LIKELY LEAD
TO SUSTAINED PERSISTENCE OF THE BAND WELL INTO THE OVERNIGHT…WITH
SOME OSCILLATORY DRIFT WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY HI-RES WRF REFLECTIVITY
GUIDANCE. THE FRONTOGENETIC FORCED ASCENT WILL BE JUXTAPOSED WITH A

My School Forecast, December 23, 2008, Matthew Dwyer – White Christmas a lock for spots with over 5″ of snow

Matthew Dwyer discusses his fear of thunderstorms after experiencing a damaging downburst wind in 2005. He’s not alone. “Brontophobia” is the fear of thunder and is common in kids and adults alike! I actually make school appearances several times per week and discuss thunderstorm safety, weather safety, and how to enjoy weather as best we can.

Speaking of enjoying weather, many of us will enjoy a White Christmas! Those with less than 5″ of snow (and especially less than 4″) will find it hard to retain a full inch of that snow for Christmas morning with warmer temperatures and rain on the way, but the rest of us won’t melt all of the “money in the bank” we have on the ground.

We hear that line a lot.. that the snow seemed much deeper when we were little. Compared to how tall we were, the snow was much deeper! . This young man may grow up to tell tales of Christmas 2008, as the Good Old Days. Thank you Kathy Fox, of Chelmsford Massachusetts, for sharing your Snowy Sunday Scene.

My School Forecast, December 22, 2008, Dylan Bengston – Chance of a White Christmas? Now 90%-100% for most!

Our My School Forecast today was for a young man who sounds like he could use a little more snow in his life on the Outer Cape. Dylan writes, “I’m not expecting any snow in my forecast, but I’ll still be happy.” Spoken like a true Cape Cod snow lover. Unfortunately, the Outer Cape from Orleans to Chatham all the way down to Nantucket now have a pretty low probability of a White Christmas – with the warm rain on Sunday eating away much of the snow that had fallen, sub-50% chances from earlier in the month have dwindled to sub 20% chances, and even that’s simply due to inherent uncertainty in the 3-5 day forecast, and will continue getting lower in the next two days. For everyone else in New England, a White Christmas is a virtual lock, even if there will be some big puddles after Christmas Eve rain. With so much snow on the ground, most spots will certainly still have plenty left on the Big Day.

Our My School forecast today caters to Kittery, ME, where Jacob Dayton is a student at the Frisbee Elementary School, where colder air streams in today, and a few inches of snow are on the way for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the chances for a White Christmas remain the same as yesterday’s updated probabilities, though I made one slight change in Southern ME…

The My School Forecast today was our first-ever in Rhode Island – great to have Alec on board from the Western Hills Middle School in Cranston, RI! I also give a long-overdue shout-out to the second and third graders at the Vining School in Billerica, MA, who waited VERY patiently as their big TV debut was delayed by the major ice storm! Our My School forecast finds a home at Weymouth High School today. Meanwhile, the chances for a White Christmas remain unchanged for the time-being, though the track of Thursday’s storm should lock in snow for most of Northern and North-Central New England.
